Collective responsibility before God for world peace

What I find most striking about Pope Francis prayer for peace – 27th October 2023 – is his sense of our collective responsibility before God for peace in the world. Indeed, it is now something he is saying repeatedly. As he mentioned himself (or alluded to) this sense of collective responsibility for peace in the world (or the absence of peace) is the central message associated with many of the world’s Marian shrines.

Our collective responsibility for world peace is something that Pope Francis regularly highlights

A very strong message, indeed.

Full Text of the prayer – 27th October 2023 – below:

Mary, look at us!

We stand here before you.

You are our Mother, and you know our struggles and our hurts.

Queen of Peace, you suffer with us and for us, as you see so many of your children suffering from the conflicts and wars that are tearing our world apart.

This is a dark hour.

This is a dark hour, Mother.

In this dark hour, we look to you, and in the light of your countenance we entrust ourselves and our problems to your maternal Heart, which knows our anxieties and fears.

How great was your concern when there was no place for Jesus at the inn!

How great was your fear when you fled in haste to Egypt because Herod sought to kill him!

How great was your anguish before you found him in the Temple!

Yet, Mother, amid those trials, you showed your strength, you acted boldly: you trusted in God and responded to concern with tender care, to fear with love, to anguish with acceptance.

Mother, you did not step back, but at decisive moments you always took initiative: with haste you visited Elizabeth; at the wedding feast of Cana you prompted Jesus’ first miracle; in the Upper Room you kept the disciples united.

And when, on Calvary, a sword pierced your heart, Mother, by your humility and strength you kept alive the hope of Easter through the night of sorrow.

Now, Mother, once more take the initiative for us, in these times rent by conflicts and laid waste by the fire of arms.

Turn your eyes of mercy towards our human family, which has strayed from the path of peace, preferred Cain to Abel and lost the ability to see each other as brothers and sisters dwelling in a common home.

Intercede for our world, in such turmoil and great danger.

Teach us to cherish and care for life – each and every human life! – and to repudiate the folly of war, which sows death and eliminates the future.

Mary, how many times have you come, urging prayer and repentance.

Yet, caught up in our own needs and distracted by the things of this world, we have turned a deaf ear to your appeal.

In your love for us, you never abandon us, Mother.

Lead us by the hand. Lead us by the hand and bring us to conversion; help us once again to put God first.

Help us to preserve unity in the Church and to be artisans of communion in our world.

Make us realize once more the importance of the role we play; strengthen our sense of responsibility for the cause of peace as men and women called to pray, worship, intercede and make reparation for the whole human race.

By ourselves, Mother, we cannot succeed; without your Son, we can do nothing.

But you bring us back to Jesus, who is our Peace.

Therefore, Mother of God and our Mother, we come before you and we seek refuge in your Immaculate Heart.

Mother of mercy, we appeal for mercy!

Queen of Peace, we appeal for peace!

Touch the hearts of those imprisoned by hatred; convert those who fuel and foment conflict.

Dry the tears of children – at this hour, so many are weeping! – be present to those who are elderly and alone; strengthen the wounded and the sick; protect those forced to leave their lands and their loved ones; console the crestfallen; awaken new hope.

To you we entrust and consecrate our lives and every fibre of our being, all that we possess and all that we are, forever.

To you we consecrate the Church, so that in her witness to the love of Jesus before the world, she may be a sign of harmony and an instrument of peace.

To you we consecrate our world, to you we consecrate especially those countries and regions at war.

Your faithful people call you the dawn of salvation; Mother, grant that glimmers of light may illumine the dark night of conflict.

Dwelling-place of the Holy Spirit, inspire the leaders of nations to seek paths of peace.

Queen of all peoples, reconcile your children, seduced by evil, blinded by power and hate.

You, who are close to all, shorten our distances.

You, who have compassion on everyone, teach us to care for one another.

You, who reveal the Lord’s tender love, make us witnesses of his consolation and peace.

Mother, Queen of Peace, pour forth into our hearts God’s gift of harmony. Amen.

Staying positive in difficult times: Heaven’s answer; be converted!

Let me share Heaven’s secret for staying positive in difficult times.

If you want to stay positive – be converted!

In all the madness that we’ve seen unfold in recent days here’s what I think is happening.

We are moving the world into a place, a context, in which the 10 secrets of Medjugorje can unfold.

The people central to Medjugorje tell us that Our Lady has said that “what she started in Fatima she’ll finish in Medugorje”

So, the Medugorje events are the fulfillment of Fatima.

Four details are important to grasp.

Firstly, the unfolding of the ten secrets in our history, our lives, will be Heaven’s victory in human affairs. It’s nothing more than the conversion of humanity to God. It’s a really positive thing, a good thing…

Secondly, the quality – the ease or the severity – of this fleshing of Heaven’s victory which is nothing more than the conversion of humanity to God will be determined by, is being determined by the quality of our relationship with God.

The further away the world is from God – the greater the sin – the more difficult it’ll be, the more difficult the road back to God. It may very well involve war and great suffering and I suspect we’re seeing the beginnings of it now. The world will crawl back! Indeed, we know that some of the ten secrets certainly involve great suffering.

Thirdly, human freedom. This is a critical point. Let me put it this way; it seems highly likely – if not guaranteed – that we will not use our freedom to turn to God until we’ve nowhere else to go!

Imagine if I delivered this on national radio or TV. Imagine the response. Outrage probably, possibly even ridicule. Here’s the problem for God: How will that outraged freedom be brought to God while God respects that same freedom? The only option for God is to let human freedom run its course… and that’s what we’re seeing.

The Medjugorje secrets are essentially a map of future world events that will bring human freedom to repentance and to God… or to put it another way, the breaking down of that outraged freedom by letting it run it’s course. Remember, letting it run its course equals God’s respect for human freedom.

We’re now so far removed from God that we’re likely to blame God for all this… or another human favourite, to use events like we’re seeing in Ukraine 🇺🇦 as evidence that there is no God.

You see, we want God to sort it. We think Heaven should sort it. We fail to see that Heaven’s victory must be fleshed. In other words, that it must happen in our lives, individually, then collectively. We must be converted.

Our freedom is crucial. God needs our freedom, Heaven needs our freedom, Love needs our freedom…

This is the reason Our Lady has been asking for prayer and fasting now (actually for forty years), asking for our help and cooperation – conversion – to lessen the suffering of humanity’s return… to lessen the pain involved in human freedom discovering it’s errors.

She is after all a Mother. Imagine her heart-space watching us…

Think of humanity as the prodigal son, Luke 15:11-33. He leaves his Father… proud… arrogant… check out Jesus description of his lifestyle… and crawls back, broken, having lost everything. It’s a parable for the whole of humanity.

My fourth point, the near collapse of the Catholic faith – indeed faith generally – has facilitated all that’s unfolding or is about to unfold.

In itself, it’s a microcosm of all that’s happening in the wider world. Sin destroys… creates hell in time and eternity.

Bear in mind it’s one of the secrets of Fatima.

The unholy has created the most devastating distractions – scandals – events so diabolical that they’ve been able to cloud our vision and impair our hearing, so much so that we’re hardly able to see or hear anything other than the unholy. Everything has been tainted, to such an extent that everything I say as a priest is easily dismissed.

Do you really think that this distraction, this cloud, this impairment, this tainting is an accident of history?

I’m repeatedly told that we need to stay positive, stay hopeful. Agreed, but Heaven has already given us our singular hope.

How much attention have we given to her and to her message?

Fear not, remember she’s already said that in the end her Immaculate Heart will triumph and that the Medugorje events will be the fulfillment of Fatima.

And remember, she can’t do it without us, we must participate too, we must respond, each one functioning as part of the whole.

It’s all down to us, to the quality of our personal conversion. In other words to the quality of humanity’s relationship with the Divine. In this relationship nobody is excluded, but rather in terms of personal conversion each person is contributing to the whole, to the overall human cost of Our Lady’s triumph.

This will decide everything… is deciding it right before our very eyes. We’re living Heaven’s judgement which is to say we’re living the fruit of our collective choices.

It’s the reason Jesus was so fond of the word “repent” and the reason Our Lady says “be converted”

The demands of justice never disappear

The demands of justice remain into eternity because they originate in eternity.

Justice brings peace, harmony, calm, stability, balance…

But when justice is contravened there is hurt, discontent, distress, conflict, discord, peace is disturbed and sometimes peace disappears altogether.

It affects individuals and then reaches out into the wider community, sometimes a whole community or society can be disturbed, distressed, unbalanced…

This is how ghettos are created, civil unrest, riots, wars…

Injustice is a horrific reality that many people are forced to live with.

Injustice doesn’t fall on stones, it falls on real people, just think of the victims of crime.

Too often we hear their cries for justice.

When I do not honour justice there’s always somebody paying the price of my decision and my subsequent actions, namely the victim of my actions. From there the distress, the discord, the conflict moves outward and drags in family, friends, neighbours…

Why are we like that? Why is reality like that?

Because we’re made in the image and likeness of God. Because we’re reflecting eternity.

In eternity and in Heaven justice must be placated, satisfied, it never disappears. Where can it disappear to? Somebody is always carrying the demands of justice, always.

So, may I appeal to you, never willingly engage yourself in injustice no matter how insignificant it seems to you because sooner or later you’re going to have to pay the price, and if it’s collective injustice, we’re going to have to pay the price. The demands of justice never disappear, unless of course, some Good Samaritan like Padre Pio, or even Jesus himself pays the demands of justice for you, for us!

But why should they do that for you or for any given generation or generations? Why?
